The California Energy Commission approved a $2 million General Fund grant to Los Angeles for a project expected to install at least about 100 Level 2 electric-vehicle charging ports on existing city light posts and public streets.
The commission approved the project as part of its consent calendar by a 4-0 vote at its Oct. 19 business meeting, according to the meeting transcript. The agreement, identified as ZVI-26-008, is for the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Street Lighting’s LA28 EV Charging Project.
The project is intended to expand public charging access in underserved neighborhoods and help meet transportation needs associated with the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles. The packet says the chargers will use existing electrical infrastructure.
The agreement is scheduled to run through June 30, 2029. Los Angeles also will be required to provide installation and project-management information, as well as quarterly reliability and utilization data after the chargers become operational. The state packet does not specify which streetlights or neighborhoods will receive the chargers, or when installation will begin.
The packet says the project supports an existing competitively awarded charging agreement and cites General Fund authority from the 2021 Budget Act. The final executed agreement and implementation milestones were not included in the records reviewed.
