The California Public Utilities Commission unanimously approved a revised safety culture improvement plan for Southern California Gas Co. and its parent, Sempera, during its June 11 voting meeting.
The decision, tied to the long-running aftermath of the Aliso Canyon gas leak, requires SoCal Gas to file quarterly compliance reports through the next safety culture assessment in 2029. The commission also said ratepayers will not bear the cost of the plan.
According to the meeting summary, commissioners described the 2015-16 leak as a major safety failure and said the revised plan is part of continued oversight of utility safety culture. The summary also says the decision calls for party comment on the quarterly reports and further work on contractor integration.
The CPUC’s action came as part of a larger meeting that also included public comment on landlines, community solar, broadband grants and battery storage. The meeting summary identifies Item 53 as the safety culture decision and says it was approved unanimously.
