Sutter County’s Agriculture, Public Protection and General Government Committee is being asked to advance a plan to replace the NET5 narcotics task force with a new Special Investigations Unit beginning July 1, 2026.
According to the committee agenda and sheriff-coroner staff report, the proposed memorandum of understanding would bring together the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office, Yuba City Police Department, Sutter County Probation Department and Sutter County District Attorney’s Office. The packet says the new unit would take over when NET5 ends at the close of fiscal year 2025-26.
The staff report says the county’s contribution would be capped at $35,000 per fiscal year, and that $139,593 in annual realignment funds would be used to reduce the impact on the general fund. It also says the agreement would transfer two deputy sheriff positions into a new Sheriff SIU cost center and designate Yuba City Police as the fiscal administrator for shared funds.
The committee packet says the item is scheduled for recommendation to the Board of Supervisors, which would have to authorize the sheriff-coroner, chief probation officer and district attorney to sign the agreement. The materials reviewed do not show final board action, and they do not spell out operational differences between NET5 and the new unit beyond the mission categories listed in the report.
The committee materials are available on the county’s meeting site, including the agenda packet and the sheriff-coroner staff report.
