Arcata City Council members took two policy steps on Aug. 5 that were separate from the meeting’s larger spending items: they adopted a new administrative policy governing the city’s use of artificial intelligence and introduced Ordinance No. 1593 to revise nuisance definitions and abatement procedures.
The AI item was approved through Resolution No. 267-03, which adopted the city’s administrative policy on artificial intelligence, according to the Aug. 5 agenda packet. The meeting materials identify the policy as a citywide ruleset for staff use of artificial intelligence.
Council also moved Ordinance No. 1593 forward on first reading. The Aug. 5 meeting minutes and staff report show the ordinance would amend Chapter 5 of Title V of the Arcata Municipal Code, which covers nuisance definitions and abatement procedures. The staff report says the rewrite would change nuisance-abatement hearings and allow the city to recover attorney’s fees.
The nuisance item is already beyond a preliminary discussion because the council introduced it for a later reading, while the AI policy had been tabled in July before returning with revisions, according to the supporting packet. The open questions now are the final ordinance language and any further council discussion before the nuisance rewrite comes back for adoption.
