Arcata City Council introduced Ordinance No. 1584 on April 1 to repeal the city’s Public Safety Committee from the municipal code, according to the meeting agenda and the council meeting record.

Police Chief Chris Ortega told council the committee has not met since April 2023 and that all seven community seats are vacant. The committee was created after the 2016-17 public safety task force, and council members said during the meeting that the body had outlived its purpose.

Some public commenters opposed the repeal, arguing it would remove a layer of oversight and resident input. The ordinance was introduced at the meeting; the available materials do not show a final adoption vote.

The committee repeal was one of several council actions on April 1. The meeting also included staff reports, consent-calendar items and public comment on a range of local issues, from staffing to city projects and community concerns.
