A California Assembly committee advanced AB 1712, a bill that would let Santa Fe Springs pursue a sale of its water system to a larger regulated provider through a protest process rather than a municipal election.
The measure moved out of the Assembly Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee on a recorded vote Tuesday and goes next to the Assembly Appropriations Committee, according to the committee hearing on the Assembly video archive.
During testimony, a bill presenter said the city’s water system is burdened by contamination-related infrastructure needs and a structural deficit, and that consolidation is intended to help address those costs. The hearing transcript was garbled in places, but it clearly showed support for the bill from the city of Santa Fe Springs and the bill advancing out of committee.
The committee also advanced several other measures at the same hearing, but AB 1712 was the bill focused on Santa Fe Springs’ water system.
