Shasta County supervisors are being asked to introduce and waive the reading of an ordinance that would amend county code section 8.32.121 to raise the reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction for unlawful dumping from $500 to $1,000.
According to the staff report, the board was directed on Aug. 11 to return with the item. The report says the draft was reviewed by the District Attorney, the Department of Resource Management and the Department of Public Works, and that County Counsel approved it as to form.
The ordinance would keep reward payments tied to the county’s general fund. The staff report says the higher cap is intended to encourage more people to come forward with useful information, strengthen enforcement efforts and deter illegal dumping.
The report quotes county code section 8.32.121 as allowing a reward, upon board approval by resolution, for information leading to the arrest and conviction of someone who willfully violates county code section 8.32.120 or Penal Code section 374.3 when the violation results in damage to or destruction of property.
The staff report lists the County Administrative Office as the drafting department and Bryce Ritchie, a senior administrative analyst, as the contact. It also notes a general fund impact tied to staff time and any rewards paid out, and says money for drafting the ordinance was included in the county’s 2026-27 budget.
