Sutter County’s Agriculture, Public Protection and General Government Committee reviewed a proposal on Aug. 17 to double the county’s low-value personal property tax exemption from $5,000 to $10,000.
According to the committee’s agenda packet, the Assessor is asking the Board of Supervisors to adopt a resolution under Revenue and Taxation Code § 155.20. Staff wrote that about 730 personal property accounts fall between the current threshold and the proposed one, and that the county collects about $11.70 a year in revenue per account on average.
The packet says the county would stop processing those accounts annually if the change is approved, which staff said would reduce the workload for the Assessor’s Office and also slightly reduce work for the Auditor and Tax Collector. The attached resolution states the exemption would apply to personal property with a full value not exceeding $10,000 and would take effect beginning with the 2027-28 fiscal year.
The same agenda packet says the Assessor’s Office would implement the higher threshold beginning with the 2026 assessment roll if supervisors approve it. The materials do not include the committee’s vote tally or indicate whether the full board has taken final action.
