Shasta County supervisors were set to take up a staff recommendation on Tuesday that would remove Steve Kerns as the District 3 representative on the Planning Commission, declare the seat vacant and later appoint Kevin Butler to fill the remainder of the term.
In a staff report for the Sept. 15 board meeting, the Clerk of the Board said supervisors should act under county code to remove Kerns, receive Supervisor Harmon’s nomination of Butler and direct staff to return with a separate appointment item. The report said the replacement would serve the rest of a four-year term ending Jan. 15, 2029.
The staff report said Butler is a District 3 resident and principal engineer and president of Butler Engineering Group, Inc., which provides civil engineering, structural engineering, survey services and construction staking services. It also said the county’s administrative office reviewed the recommendation.
The report described the Planning Commission as the body that handles general plan matters, zoning issues and subdivision-related duties. It also noted that a commissioner serves at the pleasure of the board and may be removed at any time under Shasta County Code Section 2.48.040.
The materials reviewed for Tuesday’s meeting did not include the final vote or meeting minutes, so it was not immediately clear whether supervisors approved the recommendation as presented.
