Sutter County’s Agriculture, Public Protection and General Government Committee reviewed a sheriff’s proposal to create a new Homeless Liaison cost center and add one limited-term deputy sheriff position for one year, from Sept. 1, 2026, through Aug. 30, 2027.
According to the committee packet, the item also includes a $225,000 budget amendment that would move money from Elections appropriations into the new Sheriff Homeless Liaison cost center in Public Safety Fund 0015. The packet says the new position is intended to restore a Community Response Team function and handle homelessness-related calls, encampments, illegal dumping and outreach to service providers.
The same agenda materials say the committee’s role was to advance the item to the Board of Supervisors. The packet also notes that a 4/5 vote is required for the sheriff budget amendment.
The sheriff’s office said the dedicated position would help restore proactive homelessness response, reduce the burden on patrol deputies and improve coordination with county departments and outside service providers. The materials do not show a final Board of Supervisors vote or whether the funding source or term changed after committee action.
